As I was reading Night by Elie Wiesel, I noticed a theme that was affecting Elie greatly at Buna. That is his loss of faith in Judaism and in his everyday life. My first example is when the man went to go and try to steal an extra ration of soup. Here Elie says, “In our minds he is already dead” (59). This quote shows that Elie has given up on the fact that it is possible that he wouldn’t be seen. An example of Elie and others giving up on Judaism is when they were hanging the child, and the man behind Elie said, “For God's sake where is God?” Then Elie thought to himself “ Where He is? This is where hanging here from this gallows” (65). This tells me that Elie in a way believes that God is dead and is no longer there to protect them. When the selection came, a lot of Jews lost their faith. There was one in particular, Akiba Drumer who was selected it the first selection and started saying things like, “I can’t go on... It’s over…” In response to this Elie said, “ He was not alone in having lost his faith in those days of the selection” (76). All of these examples have shown that the Holocaust made many Jews lose faith in what he believed in.

Owen,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your blog post and I especially agree with your ending statement. My question to you is, Why do you think that Elie thinks God is dead. The quote clearly states that god is not helping but why do you think he is "dead".
Overall, Great post. Keep up the good work.

Owen,
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with the emotional input you added. It was nice to hear how you felt during this novel. The only thing is a few places where you could add a comma and a few capitalization errors.
Dear Owen, This is an awesome post and you make some great points about loss of faith, I completely agree with you about when and how the jews lost their faith. It was great to hear your opinion about our class reading. Great job!!-Carter
