Faith and Hope

In the memoir Night, many themes occurred. By far, the main theme was gaining and losing faith. While Elie was in the concentration camps, he began to stop believing in God. While Elie was in a concentration camp, he questioned his belief. “Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of children to burn in His mass graves?” (85 IPAD). Elie was questioning God’s belief. While doing that, he lost hope and faith. He realize that after being so loyal to God, there was nothing in return, only pain and punishments. After only a few weeks considering God's belief, Elie lost all hope and faith. "And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast. I no longer accepted God’s silence.” (87 IPAD). At this time, Elie no longer thought God would give miracles. He just gave up. But when Elie was desperate, despite of his belief, he prayed. "At last, after all of this disbelief, his hope and faith were regained. And in spite of myself, a prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believed. Oh god, Master of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahou's son has done.” (109 IPAD). Luckily, unlike the others, Elie has regained his faith in God. Will it stay like that or will he lose his faith in God forever...

  1. Hi Max, do you think Elie's father ever had faith in God?

  2. Hi Max!
I definitely agree with all of the points you make about Elie losing his faith in God, but I'm not quite sure if he actually regains all of it. My opinion on the subject is that he is just praying to God because he feels like it's the right thing to do for his father. And yes, Elie definitely still has a piece of God within him, but it's not as great as it used to be. This was an awesome post, and keep up the great work!
