What I believe this quote shows is the mental strain put on by the germans and the struggle that he and many of the other prisoners of the camp had to endure. He gets mad at ellies father and gets very angry. And the mental toll on the people had to have been huge. This section/quote shows that the jews are also losing hope. They are being forced to do all of this work and their faith/hope is being worn down like their bodies. It’s so hard to go through anything without your faith/hope because you don't trust or think anything is going to get better. So the people have no real motivation to go on through it. I believe that his writing style really shows emotion and action directly and clearly. His writing doesn't show very much additional detail but clearly gets his point across. I believe that he does this by using some difficult words in the context that can’t always be understood but shows what he is trying to get across.
