I’ve seen it all,
Seen the buildings rise and fall,
Seen injustice,
Brutality,
Death.
I’ve seen denial,
Chaos,
Grief.
Change has changed the lives
Of many above my brow,
And many spouses have weeped
At the loss of the one they love,
Wrenched from them unjustly,
And too soon.
I’ve seen the smallest of gifts
Lighten the faces of those who live on me,
And seen men
Die quietly
In the night,
And start a revolution.
All this I’ve seen,
Under the feet
Of those who walk on me.
