The book makes me feel sad and it upsets me to think that humans can do this to each other. For example on Pg. 32 “A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes ... children thrown into the flames.” I don't know how the Nazis lived with themselves after threw babies into a fire.
It is a great book in the way that he talks about it because of how descriptive he is in his writing. I think part of what makes you feel so sad after reading it (other than the actual content) is how the writing makes you feel like you are actually experiencing it with them. For instance when they are in the train and the lady is hallucinating and screaming with her little boy trying to calm her down I felt like I could see her and her boy and I could hear her screams and the train moving. I could feel the heat of the fire in Auschwitz. The book is written in the first person which, I think makes it easier to understand. I always catch myself stopping and thinking, "I can't believe this is actually true!". Overall I think it is a really good book so far. Carter
