Faith in Night, Haley

In the memoir,  Night, many themes emerged about  the Jewish people's time at the concentration camps. One main theme in the novel is faith and losing faith in the camps. Many of the Jewish people who were trapped by the Nazis show how their faith in God changed throughout the story. "Where is merciful God, where is He?" someone behind me was asking” (64).  A young pipel is hung by the SS for something he is not responsible for and the people respond by turning to God. A man behind Elie begins to wonder if God is there, and if he is, why would he let this happen to a young, innocent boy. The man behind Elie is not the only one who is questioning his faith in God. In fact, Elie himself is questioning God. “Why do you go on troubling these poor people's wounded minds, their ailing bodies?”(66). Elie ponders why God would allow a group of people to be killed. After being loyal to God, Elie wonders why He does not help the Jewish people, and instead, lets them suffer. "It's over. God is no longer with us" (76). Even Elie’s rabbi begins to lose his faith in God. Hardly anyone in the camp still believes God is with them and will help them through their struggles. They do not understand why God allows such torture to happen to them, so they resort to not believing. I was surprised that the Rabbi, who always believed in God, no longer believed he was there. Will Elie and the other Jews regain their faith in God as the book goes on or have they lost their faith forever?

  1. Haley,
You have written a great post that does not just gives facts, but also gives the reader questions to ponder or debate about. You did an amazing job of sharing to the reader a view that they may have not seen or thought about. You also highlight important events stating why the Jewish people to still have faith in god or to abandon it completely. The only thing I would have to point out is that there is a few spacing problems and to identify when someone is talking in the quote. Overall, you wrote an excellent post that states news visions or ideas and explains them in further detail. Well Done.

  2. Haley,
Similar to what Hayden mentioned above, you made the readers think about what they are reading. You pointed out all of the important parts of the book and more. Ending in a question really made all of us think. Your blog post encourages the reader to read more and ask their self questions.
    Great post.
