Luck

Despite the horrible circumstances in the memoir, Elie and his dad have had a lot of luck . Elie had a couple incidents starting from the very beginning of the book where he was very "lucky" and people helped him out and told him what to do and what not to do. Being lucky and having people tell him what and what not to do saved his life. Being in a concentration camp was excruciating! Elie probably felt anything but lucky.
“ Please sir… I’d like to be near my father.”
All right. Your father will work here, next to you"(50).
Even though it was really risky, Elie asked to be with his father , and after begging he was put with him. When a veteran comes to Elie and tells him how to avoid selection, it made me really happy because that man was trying to help him and hoped that Elie would avoid selection. For being in a concentration camp that was a big surprise. The veteran gave him hope and confidence and told him not to be afraid.
“ I hope you will all pass… must try to increase  your chances. Before you go into the next room, try to move your limbs, give yourself some color. Don’t walk slowly, run!... Don’t look at the SS. Run, straight in front of you!...  most important, don’t be afraid “ (71).
After the man told Elie this advice he did exactly what he was told to do and avoided the selection.

In the memoir, Elie was very "lucky" and, being in a concentration camp that was very hard to do. Elie probably felt the opposite of "lucky". Even though it was hard to see some moments in the memoir, Elie was quite lucky especially being in the horrible conditions he was in.

This is a well written post and summarizes how lucky Elie was when he was in the worst place on Earth. You state many important points stating how lucky Elie was not to be selected for death or to be placed to work side by side with his father. There are some punctuation errors and in the writing try to use more formal words, but over all you wrote a strong post.

  2. Sophie,
I completely agree with you when you say he was privileged to get to work with his father and avoid the selection. The only two things I would do differently is try to avoid the word lucky. People tend to interpret this different ways. you could use a word like privileged or fortunate. The other minor error was just a few grammatical errors here and there. Great job Sophie.
    WILL.
