There are many themes in Night, a few are luck and faith. I was surprised the veterans told them they were “ Lucky”. I understand that the camp might have been a little worse earlier but, they are not at all lucky to be where they are. This quote is the veterans telling them they are lucky.
“ You’re lucky to have been brought here so late”. (70). I wonder after reading this page if Elie thought he was lucky?. If I were him I would not think I'm lucky at all! In the novel many people question faith. In one scene a small child is being hung in front of thousands of people. He hangs for a while choking because he is too small to die immediately.
“But the third rope was still moving: the child, to light, was still breathing . . .” (65).
I can't even imagine seeing this sight. I would have nightmares for years. I wonder if the Jews and other people in the camp watch? Maybe they close their eyes? When this is happening a man behind Elie questions God.
“For God’s sake, where is God?”(65).
In this situation it would be truly hard to believe God is with you. How could he be there if a child is hanging for his life? I wonder if Elie questions faith in this part?
In another part faith comes up again. This time it's the rabbi who questions faith.
“ It's over. God is no longer with us.” (76)
The rabbi from a small town in Poland, who always prayed states he no longer believes in God is with them. I wonder if this makes Elie loss hope? Reading this made me think that once you lose hope and faith, it's hard to keep going or believe you have a chance.

  1. Hi Sam,
I agree with all your points. I especially like your argument on faith. The beginning starts off a little rocky, like you should explain who they are. There are some grammatical errors and some simple cleaning up to do overall. Awesome post!

  2. Hi Sam!
I really enjoyed reading your post and I agree with mostly everything you stated, but there is one thing that I disagree with. When you talk about how you don't believe that Elie and the rest of the prisoners aren't lucky for not being in the camps for as long as the veterans have been, I feel as though, and this is my opinion, they are lucky. The conditions have gotten better over time, so the new prisoners aren't treated as harshly as the ones that were there from the beginning. And another point I wanted to add onto was that, if I was Ellie and I was being told all of this information by the veterans, I definitely wouldn't have felt lucky in that moment. But after all this time has passed, my opinion would have changed because what we've learned about the original conditions of the camps. This was a great post, and thanks for sharing your opinions on these topics! :)

  3. Dear Sam, I really like your questions about if Elie felt lucky and I understand why you would feel that he is not lucky, I disagree and agree with you because I think what then veterans were trying to say was that if they had been brought in earlier they would have certainly died, but since they were brought in late they at least have a chance. Great Job!!-Carter

  4. Sam,
I really agree with almost every point you made. I also believe that the prisoners are lucky because they could have been killed and now they still have a chance. However overall great post and thank you for sharing your opinions in another way I wouldn't have thought of.
