Ben McC. Blog #1

While reading Night, I am experiencing several different emotions. For one, I feel fear that such an event could happen again, for humans are still a growing species. I also feel sorrow for the loss of so many lives. I was very moved when Moishe the Beadle was describing what had happened to him. “Infants were tossed into the air and used as targets for machine guns” (6). I was also moved and scared when Mrs. Schächter was losing her mind. “It was as though she were possessed by some evil spirit” (25). People are ignoring her even though she clearly needs help. “When they actually struck her, people shouted their approval” (27). It scares me to think that when they are all locked in a car, people support the beating of an old woman when she is right next to her son.

Elie Wiesel had an interesting form of writing. It was very fast paced, whilst taking the time to describe his surroundings in detail. He gets his point across and does not waist time, without making a book too intense to read. Overall, he is a very effective writer and knows how to tell a captivating tale, even if it is something as horrendous as the Holocaust.

  1. Dear Ben,

I too feel very sad about the lives lost in the holocaust. However I think the world is very different then it was in 1930s and don't think that will happen again. I was also in shock when the said they tossed infants in the air and shot them. When Elie talks about Mrs. Schachter I was thinking about how horrible it would be to be her son and have to see your mom like that.

  3. Dear Ben, I think that you did an amazing job expressing your feelings and talking about this book as we've read it so far. Your blog post was really relatable and I agree with you on most of the topics that you discussed, especially the one about the babies being thrown into the air for target practice. Maybe try to go into more detail about how Elie Wiesel's writing style affected your reading of the book or how it was different from other books you've read. Great job. From Carter
